Description: This binary star system contains four Earth-like worlds, including two in a binary orbit, and four water worlds, two of which are candidates for terraforming. The system was first cataloged in 3302 and included on the Voyager Trail return route for the Distant Worlds 2 expedition. Binary pairs are quite common here. Two of the Earth-likes (B 4 and B 5) form such a pair. These two retain an average surface temperature of 292 K, or 19 °C. The closest Earth-like (B 3) is paired with a High Metal Content planet instead, the atmosphere of which had a runaway greenhouse effect, and is now entirely uninhabitable. Meanwhile, the farthest Earth-like world (B 7) is paired with a Water World that's almost habitable, if not for its temperature (256 K), the partial pressure of oxygen just below safe levels, and no landmasses to speak of. Still, these issues would be far easier to fix when terraforming (for which the planet is a candidate) than B 2's hellish atmosphere would be. The Earth-like worlds have thicker atmospheres as their distance from their parent star increases, allowing them to maintain similar surface temperatures. The percentages of water vapour in their atmospheres also increase in a similar way, contributing to their greenhouse effects. B 3 has the lowest gravity, with B 6 and B 7 having the closest gravity to Earth-normal. The system's relative proximity to the core systems could make it a tempting target for colonization as part of the Trailblazers Initiative, though as of September 3311, the nearest established colony is still more than 1,000 light-years away. The point of interest is named after CMDR TarkLark, the first explorer to publish the discovery in September 3301. However, Universal Cartographics credits CMDR The-Killer as the first discoverer, with no official reason provided for the discrepancy. | |
